Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savannah national park, located in the eastern region along the border with Tanzania. It features a diverse ecosystem of open grasslands, acacia woodlands, wetlands, and lakes such as Lake Ihema, giving it a unique landscape compared to the country’s mountainous areas. Once affected by human settlement and wildlife loss, the park has been successfully restored through conservation efforts led by African Parks in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board, making it one of Africa’s notable conservation success stories.

The park offers a classic African safari experience and is home to the “Big Five”—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino—along with giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and over 500 bird species. Game drives are the main activity, allowing visitors to explore the savannah and spot wildlife in their natural habitat. A standout experience is the boat safari on Lake Ihema, where visitors can observe hippos, crocodiles, and a wide variety of water birds, providing a different and relaxing perspective of the park.
